What is the best curl defining products for type 4 hair? I guess that’s the million-dollar question every natural girl would like to know. As a Naturalista, I think it’s safe to say we ALL strive to achieve definition one way or another. Whether you’re doing a Wash N Go, Twist out or braid out. You want your coils, kinks, or curls to POP! If you’re a Wash n Go queen more power to you, Sis! The way my hair is set up, I’m not about that life. One, I don’t have the patience and two the thought of detangling after 6 or 7 days after a wash n go give me hives (LOL). Yet I still love to see my coils defined.
Today, I’m sharing with you 5 of the best curl defining products for type 4 hair to help define those coils and curls. If you know more and would like to share please feel free to drop some suggestions in the comment section below. Some I’ve tried and others I’ve seen great reviews around the web. So I’ve included them in case you want to give it a try. As always everyone’s hair is different and will respond to certain products differently. Now with that being said, let’s check out these curl defining products, Sis.
1. MIELLE ORGANICS POMEGRANATE & HONEY CURL SMOOTHIE AND CURLING CUSTARD
This entire Pomegranate line is the bomb.com. In fact, I have every product from this line and I will definitely be doing a review soon. Like I seriously love the leave-in conditioner, it’s my Holy Grail. I use both the Curl Smoothie and Curling Custard together to define my 4B/C hair twist out or braid out. I don’t do Wash N Go’s, so I don’t know what the results would be like on a Wash N Go. Although I have heard many naturals rave about the curling custard when it comes to Wash N Go.
2. CAMILLE ROSE NATURALS ALOEE WHIPPED BUTTER GEL
My sister uses this product on her 4A/B hair and swears by this brand. I’ve only tried Camille Rose Protein mask and I absolutely love it. I’m on my DIY challenge for the rest of the year. But I do plan to give some of her other products a try. One of the things I try to do when it comes to purchasing products is stick to a particular brand especially when I find my hair responds well to their products. I rotate between three brands, Mielle, Alikay Naturals, and Shea Moisture. It doesn’t matter what Product I buy from them my hair responds well to them.
3. SHEA MOISTURE COCONUT HIBISCUS CURL ENHANCING SMOOTHIE
Natural this smoothie is the bomb! It has great slip when coating the hair and it really helps smooth the cuticles. This product was my Holy Grail post big chop for my mini fro. It really helped to define my twist out. I think this is a great product for doing a twist out. It leaves the hair super moisturized and define. I would definitely recommend this product especially for my 4b or 4c hair ladies looking to define and moisturized their coils.
4. AFRICAN PRIDE MOISTURE MIRACLE SHEA BUTTER & FLAXSEED OIL CURLING CREAM
I actually stumbled on this next brand by accident. I was traveling from NYC to Charlotte, NC last year and TSA threw away my curling cream. Apparently, the container was too big but it was a half-used container. Anyway, when I got Charlotte, I went to Walmart looking for something cheap to use in my hair until I got back home. I wanted something cheap because I stock up on my products and it didn’t make sense to me to buy something I already had. So I bought this product. I was really surprised at the result of my twist out.
This cream penetrated my hair shaft and left my curls popping. African Pride is one of those affordable brands. If you’re not looking to spend a ton of money on hair care products. I’d say to check them out. They are at major retail stores as well.
5. ALIKAY NATURALS CREME BRULEE CURLING DELIGHT
Another one of my favorites. I love the smell of their products. I’m from the Caribbean so I love the whole Island vibes I get from their products. The product consistency reminds me of “custardy/jello” and it smells great. I have high porosity hair and it’s so easy for my hair strands to latch onto each other. So I try to buy products with lots of slip and it’s easy for me to apply this product to my hair. It glides up and down my hair shaft. I’m able to define my coils using this product as well.
BONUS: Our brand ambassador Courtney recently did a tutorial using Brehani’s Curl defining cream check out the post here “Curly Girl Product Review for Type 4 Hair.” and she had great things to say about this product. If you’re interested in purchasing their Curl defining cream you can do so at www.Breahni.com and get 10% OFF using code KHR Tribe to get some dollars off.
Naturals are any of these products your Holy Grail? I have 4 out of 5 of these products as part of my stash! The Mielle Curling custard and Alikay Natural Creme Brulee are definitely Holy Grails. However, when I first went natural the Shea Moisture was a Holy Grail for me and I still resort back to it every now and then.
Happy Styling Naturals!

Dear Pretty Black girl, You are dripping with melanin and a force to be reckoned with. You are made of brown sugar, cocoa, honey and gold. You’ve been crowned with kinks as loose as 3A to as tight as 4C. No matter what type of strands you were crowned with, pretty girl, embrace them unapologetically. You are fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of God. -Welcome home, pretty girl!
