My Natural Hair Journey Featuring Evani

Dear Pretty Black girl, You are dripping with melanin and…
My name is Evani Hawkins and I have been natural for 3 years (since 2016) after I transitioned for 1 year (2015-2016), so I have 4 years of hair growth altogether and it’s been one heck of a ride!
I originally went natural because I had never seen my natural curl pattern in my whole life (outside of baby pictures) and I thought there was something wrong with that. I had gotten relaxers since I was 4 years old and never questioned the process. After many of my favorite relaxed haired YouTubers started making their transition, I decided to join them at 25 years old, and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
I’ve learned that I am a multi-textured diva! I have at least 3 different textures (3c,4a,4b/Curly, Coily, Kinky/ “C” and “S” curl mix); I am normal to low porosity, high density, normal to fine coarseness and VERY glycerin sensitive. Every failed twist out and wash and go was an opportunity to learn and grow from my mistakes. While I don’t believe I have mastered my natural hair yet, I do know I have come a LONG way and it shows! I should hit my hair length goal (waist length) this year!

I still have a lot of ground to cover but one of the greatest tips I can give anyone is to PAY ATTENTION TO INGREDIENTS! Becoming a master at your own hair requires attention to detail; knowing which ingredients your hair likes and dislikes is the fastest way to save time and money! Also perfecting a technique/hairstyle that works for you; my style of choice early in my hair journey and even now is twist outs! They keep my hair stretched, detangled, moisturized and are easy to maintain on a regular basis. I RELIGIOUSLY wear my bonnet at night, I use a shampoo with sulfates EVERY wash day to clean/strip (yes I said STRIP!) my hair and scalp, I detangle as gently as possible to avoid breakage (treat your hair like lace) and I deep condition every wash day!
Ironically, I believe a healthy natural hair growth journey is a lot less about hair, and a lot more about knowing yourself, what works and what doesn’t and not giving up when it gets hard. Patience and consistency are key and trust me, the results will follow in the overall length and health of your hair.
My favorite products of ALL TIME are by Adwoa Beauty! I discovered their brand early last year and their entire line is amazing and most importantly, my hair loves it! I highly recommend their leave-in conditioner and their deep conditioner but honestly, everything works like a dream! If you want a perfect twist out or wash and go, then try them out!

What's Your Reaction?
Dear Pretty Black girl, You are dripping with melanin and a force to be reckoned with. You are made of brown sugar, cocoa, honey and gold. You’ve been crowned with kinks as loose as 3A to as tight as 4C. No matter what type of strands you were crowned with, pretty girl, embrace them unapologetically. You are fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of God. -Welcome home, pretty girl!
