My name is Nicki, I’ve been natural for almost two years now. I am the founder of Kinky Hair Rocks. This is how my story began. I did my second big chop in October of 2016. I’d be lying to you if I said this was an easy transition for me. Trust me, the struggle was real! I had my first perm at the age of 11 and continued perming well into my young adult years. In 2012, at 23, I decided to go natural and chopped it all off. After a year of #teamnatural, I began working in Corporate America and started perming my hair AGAIN.
I was intimidated. I wore protective styles like wigs and weaves because I was ashamed of my kinky hair. I never wore it out. I felt like my hair needed to be straight to gain respect from my peers. Would anyone take me seriously if I walked around with my kinky hair in a twist out or an afro? Did I try it out?…..No! Maybe it was my insecurities at the time. Learning to love me in my natural state. A state that was hidden for years. It felt foreign to me. I was fearful of being rejected and took the easy way out by opting to perm my hair straight AGAIN! I wasn’t ready to embrace my kinky hair.
Four years later in 2016, I did another big chop. Still working in Corporate America, but this time….. I was determined to accept my natural state. I chopped it all off on a Saturday and went to work with my mini fro that Monday. I felt so liberated (lol). I had already made up my mind, I was going to rock this kinky hair and this is me! This world is going to accept this kinky haired girl for who she is. And as days have turned into weeks and months into a year and a half now, since my big chop. I can honestly say I’ve fallen in love with my natural hair. Being natural has been a lot of fun for me. I get excited when I go to Sally’s or Target to buy new hair products. Saturdays are wash day for me and it has become my favorite day of the week. It’s like I’m in a relationship with my hair and my job is to nurture it.
Today, I wouldn’t trade my hair for straight hair if my life depended on it. I’ve fallen in love with every perfect and unruly strand. Yes, it has been a challenge. But do you know what has saved me? I’ve spent countless hours searching the web and educating myself about natural hair. Finding ways to keep it moisturized and healthy. Experimenting with different products. Digging through Social Media and YouTube for styling tips and tricks from my favorite Vlogger or Influencers.
I created this blog for the pretty black girl with kinky hair who is unashamed to embrace her natural hair. I’ll be sharing my natural hair journey, along with my findings from around the web on hair growth, products, hair regimen, protective and natural hairstyles along with a little encouragement to bless your soul.
Sis, may your hair flourish as your soul prosper and be in good health.
