Natural Hair 101 Series: Wash Day Routine

Natural hair wash day routine

What’s up naturals, here is an idea I’ve had for a while now. Going natural can be quite confusing for some naturals. Especially when you don’t know the basics. I recently did a poll to see whether my followers wanted a series on everything curly girls should know about being natural. So here it is! The first post of this series is everything you need to know about a WASH DAY Routine. Wash Day is a very important topic in the natural hair community.

As many individuals start their natural hair journey wash day may be a foreign concept. I know when I was relaxed I would go to the salon to get my hair done. And when I did wash my hair I wasn’t as detailed as I am now. There are so many different options and methods to consider when it comes to a curly girl’s wash day routine. But in this post, I will be sharing MY THOUGHTS on the topic.

What is Pre-poo?  {PRE-Shampoo}; The process of applying a treatment to your hair/scalp before shampooing or co-washing your hair. Is it really necessary to pre-poo on wash day? Honestly, I pre-poo most of the time when washing my hair but not every time (because I can sometimes be a lazy natural). But when I do pre-poo the rest of my wash day process is so much easier. There is a visible difference that my hair is instantly moisturized. Pre-poo’s have a lot of benefits! This is because you can use any combination of products, oils, natural ingredients to create the perfect pre-poo based on what your hair needs at the moment.

  • Makes the detangling process easier
  • Softens hair
  • Protects hair against the shampoo process
  • Restores moisture

  • DIY Hot Oil treatment
  • Any non-deep conditioner and oil
  • I prefer Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner and Jamaican Black Castor Oil
  • Taliah Waajid’s “The Great Detangler “

Next step, I wash and deep condition my hair. I wash and deep condition my hair ONCE per week unless I am protective styling. Now the question is do you shampoo or co-wash? I currently shampoo my hair. I used to co-wash mostly and shampoo once a month, but I started to experience ITCHY scalp so returned to shampooing every week. I used to think that shampoo dried out my hair but I just needed to find the right shampoo. Anyone is trying to determine if they should shampoo or co-wash their hair here are a few things to consider:

  • A clean scalp is necessary for healthy hair growth
  • Product build-up can cause itchy and irritated scalp

Deep Conditioning is a MUST! This process aids in restoring moisture and other nutrients back into your hair. There are endless options for deep conditioning. Knowing what your hair needs are the first step. Then you can choose products to provide your hair with what it needs. From clays to DIY and protein treatments there are so many products/ingredients that can be used to strengthen, soften, and moisture your hair.

Wash Day doesn’t have to be a dreaded thing. Just like anything else you get out what you put in. Take the time to give your hair what it needs, and it will flourish. • I just don’t understand some beauticians in Cleveland Ohio I am natural but every time I go to the salon i never get a deep conditioner what’s up with that I think my hair started suffering from heat damage so I started doing it myself braiding it up and oiling it at night I don’t understand that it has made me so confused about natural hair I don’t know if I have 4 b it c ?

    • That’s crazy. What do you ask for when you go to the salon? I haven’t been to a salon in years. I do my own hair. But deep conditioning is a vital part of a healthy hair regimen.
