Okay, Naturals are you ready for part 3 of our “Natural Hair Care Regimen blog series?” Hopefully, you’ve been keeping up and have learned a thing or two thus far. We cannot stress how important it is to know your hair and incorporating the right products to your regimen. The right products will strengthen the overall health of your hair and promote hair growth. You guys are always asking us what can you use for hair growth. Well, you need to focus on using products that will strengthen your hair and help to retain moisture. Which will cause the growth to come later.
Today we’re featuring Shianne, a natural hair influencer who has a head full of gorgeous type 4B/C curls. I swear her FRO gives us life. She’s sharing her personal journey and tips for type 4 hair.
Hair Type: My hair is 4C/4B and to be completely honest I have no clue what my hair porosity is!
I started my healthy hair care journey around 2013 and my hair began to flourish and grow, during this time I was still getting relaxers about 4 times a year but that slowly turned to 3 times, then 2, and then 1. Finally, I realized, “hey I haven’t gotten a relaxer in a full year, why not keep going?” I began to fall in love with my coils and dreamt of what they would look like years from now. And here I am today!
Did you transition or big chop immediately?
I transitioned for about a year and a half. My biggest struggle post big chop was finding styles to wear my hair since it was the shortest it had ever been.
Tips for those transitioning
I learned that Moisture, Moisture, Moisture was key to see hair growth for my type 4 hair.
Don’t over-protective style! Our hair needs water, food (moisture) and most importantly fresh AIR to grow! Don’t fall into a trap of constantly hiding your hair in “protective styles”.
What are your go-to products right now and why do you use them?
I use these products because they’re super moisturizing and I’m protein sensitive!
- Coconut Cowash By As I Am
- TGIN Moisture Rich Shampoo
- Honey and Sage Deep Conditioner by Alikay Naturals
- Honey Miracle Hair Mask by TGIN
- Keracare Leave-in Conditioner
- Meille Organics White Peony Leave-in Spray
- To seal Whipped Shea Butter or Almond Oil
What have you learned about your hair thus far?
My hair, more than anything, likes to be left alone and hates protein!
What advice would you give to someone with the same hair type or porosity? What should they know about that hair type and texture?
Do not hair envy! I know it may be difficult because there are so many naturalistas with amazing natural hair, but trust me you are doing yourself no favors by comparing yourself. Keeping your hair in a stretched state will reduce tangling and make managing your kinky type 4 hair much easier.
Naturals, I hope you enjoyed this post and learned something new from Shianne ’s regimen for those of you with 4B/C hair. I hope you found this informative. You can continue to follow her natural hair journey on Instagram @kinkzwithstyle her blog www.kinkzwithstyle.com and subscribe to her YouTube. If you don’t know what your hair texture is. I recommend taking the texture quiz over at NaturallyCurly.com. If you don’t know what your hair porosity is I recommend taking the test as well. You can do it with a glass of water at home. You can find more details about the test in my hair regimen for the high porosity hair.
Tune in Wednesday and Friday for part 4 and 5 of our Natural Hair Care Regimen blog series.

Dear Pretty Black girl, You are dripping with melanin and a force to be reckoned with. You are made of brown sugar, cocoa, honey and gold. You’ve been crowned with kinks as loose as 3A to as tight as 4C. No matter what type of strands you were crowned with, pretty girl, embrace them unapologetically. You are fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of God. -Welcome home, pretty girl!
