Ladies, It’s time for a Curly Girl Hair PRODUCT REVIEW! Sometimes, I walk down the hair care aisle looking for products and I feel so overwhelmed. There are SO many different products out there to try, I just want to try them all! I remember when I first went natural, I had no idea where to start when it came to styling products. I was following my favorite curly/natural hair bloggers with hair types that I thought were similar to my texture as I could get and followed their advice. But there are so many things that I wish someone would have told me when I began my natural hair journey.
Everybody’s hair is different and a hair product that may work for one person may not work for YOU. With that being said: I’m here to talk a little bit about my top 3 hair care products that I must have in my product collection. I hope that this review will steer you in the right direction, as I believe these products are helpful for any natural in their early stages and beyond. These are products that I also get the most questions about. Let’s get started!
1. DEEP CONDITIONING:
Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Restore Treatment Masque
This deep conditioner is tried and true for me. I used it for three years during my transition phase and I still use it to this day. The product is majority butter-based with shea butter being the main ingredient. It also contains peppermint and keratin which are clearly stated on the label of the product. Peppermint is an excellent scalp stimulant, which encourages growth. Keratin is a protein, which helps to strengthen and restore broken bonds in the hair, enabling the hair to rebuild itself from the inside out. The product is nice and thick, but because it is so thick I personally apply the product in sections and then two-strand twist the sections to make sure the deep conditioner penetrates my hair well.
It is also encouraged to use this product with heat, which I believe enhances the benefits of deep conditioning. Deep conditioners are designed for deep penetration into the hair layer, so adding heat and letting the product sit in your hair for at least 30 minutes allows the cuticle layer to open and absorb the product. When I use this product, I typically sit under the dryer for 30 minutes and my hair literally soaks it up. You know you have a good DC when your hair literally drinks the product.
Mielle Organics Moisturizing Avocado Hair Milk
This product is something that I just experimented with recently. It was one of those products that I used incorrectly the first time and then tried using it a different way and was literally taken aback by the results. I had a “WOW why haven’t I used this product more?” moment. Initially, I thought that because it was a creamier product that I should use it for twist-outs only. I didn’t really like how my twists came out when I used this product so I tried it for a wash and go and was amazed! The key to using creamy products for wash and go’s is to diffuse.
I think air-drying could work too but diffusing my hair with this product allowed me to set the style quicker and control the level of shrinkage. Like I said earlier, this product is creamy and has great slip. It is also very moisturizing—my curls were left juicy and had a nice lightweight, oily feel to them. There also wasn’t any clumping or white residue when layered with other products. If you’re looking for a good styling product that serves multiple purposes, this is a good go-to!
Aunt Jackie’s Curls and Coils Don’t Shrink Flaxseed Gel
Oh my goodness girl…get you some of this gel NOW. I mean it! I will be using this gel long-term. This product will always be in my collection because it is lightweight, free of harmful chemicals, all-natural and yields amazing definition for my curls. I am HIGHLY pleased with the results of my wash and go’s every single time I use this product. The consistency is what hooked me. When you use a product more than once and get the same, bomb results every time, that is what you call a HIGH-quality product. And you know what’s even better about this product?
IT’S CHEAP! It’s so affordable, it costs $6.99 at Target. I also struggle with shrinkage, and this product does exactly what it says it does. The elongating properties of this gel are impressive. Flaxseed gel is full of Omega-3 fatty acids which help to improve the elasticity of the hair. It also nourishes hair follicles and the hair shaft making it less prone to breakage. 10/10 would definitely recommend it.
DISCLAIMER: This product review is for the purpose of helping naturals kick-start their journey experimenting with products. This review is purely subjective. In my opinion, I feel that they are great products that work very well with my hair and encourage all to try them. However, they may not necessarily work for everybody.
Happy product shopping!!
